How can I click to call, text, or email a contact?

Jottful Contacts includes the ability to call, text, or email your contacts with just one click: 

In order for these links to work on your device, your browser and operating system need to know which apps you prefer to use for phone and email.

Here's how to set that up:

On Smartphones & Tablets (iOS & Android)

No extra setup required! Mobile operating systems handle these links natively.

• Calls: Tapping a phone number opens your device’s native Phone app with the number pre-dialed.

• Texts: Tapping a text link opens Messages (iOS) or Google Messages (Android) with a new draft.

• Emails: Tapping an email address opens your device’s default mail app (Apple Mail, Gmail, Outlook, etc.).

Tip: If email links open the wrong app on Android, go to Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Opening links and select your preferred mail app. On iPhone, go to Settings > [Your Mail App] > Default Mail App.

On Desktop Computers (Mac & Windows)

Desktop computers handle calls, texts, and webmail slightly differently depending on whether you use web-based services (like Gmail) or desktop applications (like Outlook, Microsoft Teams, or FaceTime).

1. Setting Up Click to Email

If you use Webmail (e.g., Gmail in Chrome):

1. Open Google Chrome and log into your webmail account (e.g., mail.google.com).

2. Look at the right side of your browser’s address bar for an icon that looks like two overlapping diamonds.

3. Click the diamond icon and select Allow when prompted to let the site open email links.

4. (Optional) If you don't see the diamond icon, go to Chrome Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Additional permissions > Protocol handlers and ensure "Sites can ask to handle protocols" is turned on.

If you use a Desktop App (e.g., Outlook or Apple Mail):

• Windows: Go to Start Menu > Settings > Apps > Default apps. Search for MAILTO or Email, and select your default app (e.g., Outlook).

• Mac: Open the native Mail app. In the top menu, go to Mail > Settings > General, and choose your default app under Default email reader.

2. Setting Up Click to Call

When you click a phone number on a desktop, your browser will attempt to send the call to a calling application installed on your computer (such as Microsoft Teams, Webex, Zoom, Google Voice, or FaceTime).

• Mac Users:

  1. Open FaceTime.

  2. Click FaceTime > Settings (or Preferences) in the top menu.

  3. Under Default for calls, select your preferred calling app (e.g., FaceTime, Microsoft Teams, Webex, or iPhone Cellular Calls).

• Windows Users:

  1. Go to Settings > Apps > Default apps.

  2. Scroll down and click Choose default apps by protocol (or search tel in the top search bar).

  3. Find the TEL protocol and select your calling app (e.g., Phone Link, Teams, Webex, or Zoom).

3. Setting Up Click to Text

• Mac Users: If your iPhone and Mac are signed into the same Apple ID with iMessage enabled, clicking a text link will automatically open the Messages app on your Mac to send an SMS or iMessage.

• Windows Users: To send text messages from your PC, set up Microsoft's Phone Link app connected to your Android or iOS device. Then, assign Phone Link as the default handler for SMS protocol links under Settings > Apps > Default apps.
