What should I do with this copyright infringement email (example: COPYTRACK)?

From time to time, business owners receive emails claiming that an image on their website is being used without proper licensing. These messages can feel urgent or intimidating, but don’t panic.

Here’s what to do:

1. Do Not Respond Immediately

If you receive a copyright-related email:

  • Do not click links in the message
  • Do not upload documents to external portals
  • Do not send payment
  • Do not admit fault

Forward the email to us so we can review it.

2. Understand What These Emails Are

Companies like COPYTRACK are copyright enforcement agencies. They monitor the internet for image usage and may contact businesses if they believe an image is unlicensed.

An email like this is:

  • Not a lawsuit
  • Not a court order
  • Not proof of wrongdoing

It is a claim that needs verification.

3. How Jottful Sources Images

At Jottful, we primarily use copyright-free stock imagery.

We have an agreement with Pexels, which provides access to a large commercial-use image library. In some cases, we may also use:

  • Other properly licensed stock image sources
  • AI-generated images created specifically for your website

If a concern arises, we review the source and licensing documentation.

4. Removing the Image (strongly recommended)

If you would like the image removed, you may:

  • Ask us to remove or replace it for you, or
  • Replace it yourself through the Magical Editor

Removing an image is not an admission of wrongdoing — it is often simply a precaution.

5. Handling Aggressive or Suspicious Emails

If the sender appears suspicious or overly aggressive, it may make sense to wait and see if they escalate. If they bring in an attorney, you can then provide proof of licensing at that time.

This approach helps avoid unnecessary stress or engagement with aggressive outreach while still protecting your rights.

6. What Happens Next?

If you ever receive a copyright-related notice:

  • Forward the email to us at support@jottful.com
  • Do not respond directly
  • Do not send payment

We’ll review the situation and guide you on the appropriate next steps.
